If you’re just getting started with playing the clarinet, this checklist is for you! We’re gonna keep it simple, since you really don’t need all that much to get started. And you probably already have the last two items!
Clarinet
This one goes without saying! But, I’m including it in this list because I want to mention that borrowing from your school or renting from your local music store is a fantastic option when you’re first getting started. If you’re looking to purchase right away I recommend the Yamaha YCL-255 Student Clarinet.
Reeds
A box of reeds is plenty to get you started. Boxes typically come with 10 reeds. I recommend these reeds for beginners, either strengths 1.5 or 2.0.
Reed Case
In order to help your reeds dry out evenly and last longer, I recommend storing them in a reed case.
Mouthpiece Cushion
These little rubber stickers that go on your mouthpiece will provide grip and comfort for your top teeth, as well as help bring warmth to your tone. My favorite is the BG .8 mm mouthpiece cushion.
Music Stand
Having a music stand will make it more comfortable to read your music. You’ll be able to place your music at a comfortable eye reading level. This will you help you play with the correct posture. A foldable music stand is a great beginner option. They come in fun colors too!
Pencil
Have several pencils accessible! For example always keep one on your music stand and one in your instrument case if there’s room for it. This way you’re always prepared to make markings/notes on your music, write down assignments for lessons, or anything you want to make sure you remember.
Notebook
If you’re taking lessons, a notebook is essential. You’ll want to write down any key notes and assignments. Believe me, during your lesson you might think you’ll remember everything you wanted to, but once you wrap up that lesson you’re back to your other activities for the day. It’s best to write things down, you and your teacher will be thankful.
With just these 7 items you can make big strides in your beginner clarinet playing phase! If you’re looking to sign up for one-on-one lessons, you can book a lesson with me here.
